A Lifelong Love of Words

As a journalist, broadcaster and former BBC editor I know the power words have. I am passionate about them and fascinated by language.

Wordcraft is central to all my products and services. I understand audiences and I leverage user research to address them online, on social media and in print.

I was the editor responsible for digital content at the BBC Academy. And I wrote and edited a range of intranet portals for BP plc, including the online version of the company's global induction programme, 'Discover BP'.

Did you know that people read only about 20% of the words on your website?

They scan the page looking for key information. And numerals attract attention because users are often looking for a price.

When I write copy for a website my approach is based on behavioural research like this.

In a nutshell, less means more, and the key is plain English.

The Notts NHS App

The NHS commissioned me to write the words for a website showing patients how to use a new app.

The requirement was for jargon-free explanatory text that was accessible to those without English as a first language.

I was influenced by my knowledge of BBC Local Radio listeners, plus user experience research by the Nielsen Norman Group, to maximise intelligibility.

The client wanted a website that stood out in a crowded marketplace. With the emphasis on visuals, every word had to justify its place.

Again, I leveraged NNg's UX research and the Flesch-Kincaid readability index to create high-impact, concise copy.

Proof-reading
